Brief History of the Bengali Language

Bengali (or bangla; local name: bāṅlā / বাংলা) is an eastern Indo-European language native to the region of Southeast Asia. Bengali is the most widely spoken language in Bangladesh, with about 140 million speakers. It is also the second most widely spoken language in India, with roughly 75 million speakers. It is the national language of Bangladesh and the official language of several Indian states, such as West Bengal, Tripura and certain districts of Assam.

Bengali is also spoken by a great number of communities in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. According to the 2003 Bangladesh Asian Society, approximately 230 million people worldwide named Bengali as their mother tongue.
