Brief History of the Korean Language
North and South Korea are remarkably ethnically and linguistically homogeneous, as both countries have relatively no linguistic minorities: official sources state that 91% of South Koreans speak Korean, with minorities being mostly Chinese. Besides North Korea, which has 20 million Korean speakers, Korean is spoken by over 2 million people in China, primarily in provinces bordering Korea. There are also a half-million Korean speakers in Japan and Russia, and at least 600,000 more in the United States. Other Korean speaking communities can be found in Singapore, Thailand, Guam and Paraguay. There are up to 78 million people who speak Korean in the world.
