Brief History of the Swahili Language

Swahili, or Kiswahili, is a Bantu language native to Southern Kenya. Swahili is partly derived from Arabic and has incorporated Persian and European words into its lexicon. Swahili is used by many ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa and is the most widely spoken language on the continent, with over 60 million speakers. It is also the national language of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, the Comoros and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
