Brief History of the Estonian Language

Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language that is closely related to Finnish and more distantly related to Hungarian. It is spoken by approximately 1.1 million people, the majority of which (950 000) live in Estonia.

Native Estonian speakers represent 67.9% of Estonia’s population, while Russian speakers represent 25.6%. The two groups account for 93.5% of the Estonian population. In the three Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), the official language is the language of the majority: Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian respectively. This majority is 67.9% in Estonia, 75.5% in Lithuania, and 54.5% in Latvia.
