Certified Translation of Chinese Diplomas (毕业证, 学位证, 成绩单)

China issues two separate diplomas where Canada sees only one: the 毕业证 attests that you completed the programme, the 学位证 that the degree was conferred. Both are filed, along with the transcript. Asiatis produces their certified translation into English.

What is the bìyèzhèng?

The 毕业证书 (graduation certificate) and the 学位证书 (degree certificate) are two separate documents, issued by the institution and registered separately: you can complete a programme without the degree being conferred, and the 毕业证 alone shows it. The 成绩单 (transcript) completes the set with courses, credits and grades. A Canadian application generally expects all three. The Chinese system backs them with online verification: 学信网 (CHSI) certifies the academic record and the degree, through two distinct procedures, and issues digital reports. Depending on what you are aiming at — credential evaluation, immigration application, employer, professional order — sometimes it is the verification report that counts, sometimes the certified translation of the documents themselves.

Variants of the document

NameTypeWhat it covers
毕业证书bìyè zhèngshūGraduation certificateAttests that you completed the programme. It, and not the 学位证, is what the CHSI academic record certification covers.
学位证书xuéwèi zhèngshūDegree certificateAttests that the degree — bachelor, master, doctorate — was conferred on you. A separate document, with a separate certification procedure.
成绩单chéngjìdānTranscriptSets out courses, credits and grades. Must bear the seal of the academic affairs office: an unsealed transcript is not admissible, whatever its translation.

How to obtain the document in China

  1. 1

Collect all three from your institution

The 毕业证 and 学位证 were handed to you at the end of the programme. The transcript is requested from the academic affairs office, which prints and seals it. Ask for several sealed copies: they are far easier to obtain on site than from abroad.

  2. 2

For a credential evaluation, go through 学信网

WES and the other evaluation bodies want a verification report sent directly by 学信网 or by the Ministry of Education centre, through the international cooperation channel of your student file. A certified translation does not replace that transmission.

  3. 3

For IRCC, an employer or an order: certified translation

Outside credential evaluation, what is expected is the certified translation of the documents themselves, together with a copy of the original the translator worked from.

  4. 4

    Send us the scanned documents

A clear, complete scan is enough: both sides of the diplomas, every page of the transcript, seals included. Keep the originals — those are what you will present.

What an acceptable translation requires

IRCC requires any document that is not in English or French to be accompanied by a translation into one of those two languages, and for Chinese documents accepts either a notarized or a certified translation. The translation must be complete — institution name, certificate number, seals, president's signature and transcript entries included — and may not be produced by the applicant, by a family member, or by a representative on the application. Note that credential evaluation bodies follow a different logic: they ask for a verification report transmitted by 学信网, not a translation. For a Quebec immigration application, the MIFI admits French and English alike, provided the translator belongs to OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC or CTINB.

The pitfalls specific to this document

Two diplomas, not one — and people often send just one

The 毕业证 and the 学位证 are two documents. Sending only the graduation certificate suggests the degree was never conferred; sending only the degree certificate leaves a gap in the academic record. Unless told otherwise, include both.

A certified translation does not replace CHSI verification

For a credential evaluation, the body wants a report sent directly by 学信网 or by the Ministry of Education centre. Paying for a translation believing it satisfies that requirement means paying twice and losing weeks.

An unsealed transcript is not a transcript

The seal of the academic affairs office is what distinguishes the official transcript from a printout. A transcript downloaded from a student portal, unsealed, will be set aside — and the translation with it.

Grading scales do not transpose

A mark out of 100, a 优秀 grade or a Chinese credit system has no direct Canadian equivalent. The translation renders the original value and its scale; converting to letters or a GPA would substitute an evaluation for a translation, which is not our role.

What you receive

  • Certified translation of the 毕业证, the 学位证 and the 成绩单, faithfully laid out
  • Grades and credits rendered in their original scale, without conversion
  • Institution name and programme title matching their official designation
  • Translator's signed and sealed declaration, meeting IRCC requirements
  • PDF delivery — the digital format is enough for IRCC; paper copy on request

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my diploma translated for a WES evaluation?

No, not for the evaluation itself. Evaluation bodies ask for a verification report sent directly by 学信网 or by the Ministry of Education centre. The certified translation serves elsewhere: an IRCC application, an employer, a professional order, a direct admission.

How much does it cost to translate my diplomas?

The price depends on the number of pages: two diplomas and a transcript often run to three to eight pages depending on the length of the programme. The simplest route is our online quote form, where you upload the documents and get your price in a few minutes.

What is the difference between 毕业证 and 学位证?

The 毕业证 attests that you completed the programme; the 学位证 that the degree was conferred on you. They are two separate documents, with two separate verification procedures. You can hold the first without the second.

My transcript comes from the university portal. Is that enough?

Only if it bears the seal of the academic affairs office. An unsealed printout is not an official transcript, and no translation will give it that character. Ask for a sealed copy before ordering the translation.

Do you convert my grades to a Canadian equivalent?

No. We render your grades in their original scale, stating that scale. Converting would be credential evaluation, which is the business of bodies accredited for it, not of a translator.
