Brief History of the French language

French, a Romance language, is the mother tongue in many countries. It is primarily spoken in France, from which it originates (“Langue d’Oïl”), Belgium (in Wallonie and Brussels), a number of provinces in Canada (namely Quebec, but also Ontario, Manitoba and New Brunswick), Monaco, Luxemburg (where it is one of the country’s three official languages) and Switzerland (where it is one of the country’s four official languages).

In 2005, a study counted 175 million French speakers worldwide. French is also the second most important language in the world in terms of international negotiations.
